Geographic Focus

AbitibiBowater provides support geared to the needs of the communities in which the Company has wholly-owned operations, including paper mills, sawmills, woodlands operations, recycling processing centers and recycling collection programs.

Areas of Funding

To make the most meaningful contribution in the regions in which it operates, AbitibiBowater has chosen three sectors for its donations: education, health and sustainable development. Humanitarian needs are supported through Centraide/United Way campaigns.

Education

AbitibiBowater dedicates a portion of its budget to support industry-related scholarship programs at the college and university level. Additionally, industry-related technical programs and training, as well as general literacy efforts, receive secondary consideration.

Health

AbitibiBowater focuses its health-related philanthropic efforts in the rural communities in which it operates.

Sustainable Development

Eligible organizations must have a balanced approach, with public policy and environmental principles consistent with AbitibiBowater's environmental, health and safety policies and priorities.

Eligibility

  • Organizations that have an official, government-issued charitable registration number (some exceptions for sponsorships).
  • Organizations located within AbitibiBowater's operating regions.
  • Contributions to political parties, riding associations and candidates are not considered charitable and not specifically governed by this policy.
  • Religious organizations are not eligible for donations or sponsorships.
  • Organizations already funded by Centraide/United Way will not be considered as AbitibiBowater already actively supports Centraide/United Way through a number of different initiatives.
  • Projects that support only one person are not eligible.
  • Automatic renewals/long-term commitments will not be considered.
